When and Where Does Class Meet?

The summer schedule is: Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 27th – August 31st, 6:00 to 7:45pm. Class WILL NOT MEET on the following days: June 29th, July 4th, July 6th, July 20th, July 25th. Updates to the schedule will be listed on this website and on our Facebook page.

Class meets in the Robert Crown Center (the RCC), Hampshire College’s athletic facility. Weather permitting, we may also practice outside the RCC.

How Much Does it Cost?

$135 for the summer. Attend as many classes as you wish. The course fee includes all equipment and personalized instruction.

Who Can Enroll?

This class is appropriate for anyone, especially those who have completed First Shot training or an Introductory Kyudo class, but newcomers are welcome and instruction will be provided.

How Do I Enroll?

Bring the Liability Waiver, Enrollment Form, and a check for $135 payable to Trustees of Hampshire College with you to a class session. Samuel Kanner, Shuuko’s instructor, will guide you through any questions on the paperwork and file it with Hampshire College on your behalf.

What Do I Need to Bring/Wear?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow freedom of movement. Tight jeans may not be conducive to the kneeling postures and shooting forms which we may practice. A traditional kyudo uniform (gi, hakama, obi) is welcomed and ideal, but not required. We can help you purchase a uniform if you so wish.

Otherwise, all equipment will be provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. Bring a bottle of water if you wish.

What Will We Do During Class?

After a brief opening meditation and preparing the equipment, we warm up at the makiwara (a blank target), usually by practicing Shichido. We will introduce and review other shooting forms, such as Hitote and standing Hitote. We will shoot at longer distances in the South Lounge and in the gymnasium. Makiwara practice may be held outside, weather permitting. We periodically discuss equipment care and maintenance. We close each class with a brief meditation and equipment pack-up.

How Can I Continue to Learn Kyudo after the Summer?

An intermediate Kyudo class runs every semester at Hampshire College. You are welcome to enroll and continue your practice! The Fall 2017 Intermediate class will be held from 6pm – 7:30pm in the South Lounge of the RCC. Contact info@shuuko.org for more details.
